I was overwhelmed by the energy of the campus as I was walking the campus to take some pictures. Sometimes we forget that I work at a university campus filled with dreamers, innovators, and future global leaders. I found myself just taking it all in while smiling at pupils and parents I have never met before. ( It could have been only a little weird, but hey, I happened to be caught in an instant). Suddenly, I desired to travel back in its history, go back to college and experience this all over again!
Yesterday early morning, I saw the look of excitement and awe on the faces of first-year students as they were entering their dorms for the very first time. Subsequently, we sensed a great amount of pride and a bit of hesitation from parents as they struggled to allow their kids go. It is apparent that this moment is just a milestone in every of their lives. Students look forward to their next four years at USC and wonder at all the possibilities it could bring, while parents feel a feeling of achievement because they were somewhat accountable for getting their kids to college. With all of these emotions swirling on campus, i could see why there have been therefore many hugs going around.
through the welcome convocation today, speakers endured in front associated with the incoming course of 2017 and provided advice on how to make the most of their time only at USC. I want to reiterate what Professor Harkness, from the Dornsife university, said during her speech: show up. It is not as easy in your own life as it sounds but you will be a better human being the sooner you can practice it. Towards the new incoming freshmen at USC and present high school students; I challenge you become present. Show up in your classes. Show up in your conversations. Be present while you do your homework. Be present when you’re meeting people that are new. Be current when you write your statements that are personal. Be present https://shmoop.pro/how-to-format-a-literature-review/ when you study for your AP/IB tests. Be present when the tests are taken by you. Be present when you ask her/him down. Be present in conflict. Be present in new challenges. Be contained in all of one’s new experiences and adventures. Take it all in. Be current!
Hey Parents! Listen Up!
Parents play an important role in the entire college process. Often times, parents help subsidize some, if not all, of going to an university, and are also always here to ask those specific ‘parent’ questions that you as students can’t be bothered with (actually mom, did you need to inquire of the tour guide whenever the very last meningitis outbreak was?)
But, there are instances where parents must take a seat that is back allow their sons and daughters to ask the difficult concerns. Here, we now have a compiled an inventory of ‘dos and donts’ about parenting throughout the college search and application process:
• Do help your son or child determine what they are searching for in a college, reminding them to consider location, size, academic programs, cost/financial help, etc. locating a good fit for your specific wants and needs is more important than the cachet of the name.
• Don’t gather all the information for them! Allow them to make contact with admission counselors and discover the appropriate information for themselves. After all, they will somewhere be in college in no time, which is important they learn to navigate the process themselves.
• Do encourage your sons and daughters to visit college campuses, and come with them on those tours! The way that is best to get acquainted with an university is to make the visit to campus.
• Don’t check your sons and daughters in for campus trips, interviews, receptions, etc. Allow them do it! This shows us they are independent and mature.
• Do remind your sons and daughters that not getting in to their first option school might appear such as the end of this world at that moment, but that things exercise and that they’ll be successful wherever they go so long as they strive. And, encourage them to transfer if that institution remains at the top of these list even with enrolling someplace else.
• Don’t fill away their applications for them! We could inform also it reflects poorly on the applicant. We realize that these are young adults using and expect their applications to share their voice that is true and.
So the moral is: find a balance. Realize that your child is about to attempt a life-changing journey and that starting to just take ownership of the college application process is a good jumping off point. But, also rest assured if they involve where to send the care package that we are here to answer those tough ‘parent’ questions, even.
